A portable career is a career that you can take with you, wherever you go. It can gracefully move with you to a new city or new country - be it for several months or several years.

A portable career gives you more freedom to choose where you want to live and work, and helps you maintain a professional identity rather than starting over professionally every time you move somewhere new. It gives you more flexibility to organize your work to support your lifestyle, and can actually help you work less so you can enjoy life more.

Portable vs. Non-Portable Careers

But what does a portable career look like? Let's take a closer look.

All fulfilling careers - portable or not - are comprised of certain things. They are an expression of a person's purpose, values and passions. They leverage a person's unique qualities and strengths, as well as their knowledge, skills and experience that they enjoy using. And most importantly, they support a person's chosen lifestyle.

Pros and cons of Portable Careers Vs Non-Portable:

* Portable careers often involve services or skill sets that are generally in high demand in many parts of the world. In my case I went for languages.Owning my own translation agency and still one of the skills set of a portable career i work on. When I gave up my YMCA job in the U.S. to come to Canada as a trailing spouse, I tried to look at the situation as an opportunity for myself as well as for my husband.I wish I would have realized sooner that as a writer/copywriter too, I have another of the most portable jobs around.

* Portable careers are not primarily driven by credentials or degrees that are jurisdiction or location specific. Jobs that require certain qualifications or credentials that are not accepted in many locations can make pursuing a mobile career quite difficult.

* Even though with some portable careers a person may decide to only work locally, in general portable careers to do not limit you to your local market. Due to my travel schedule my career allows me to work from the countries I'm visiting or working on!

* Portable careers usually involve regular engagement with technology and online business and communication tools, particularly if you are providing services virtually or creating and selling products online. By technology what it means is everything from email, online networks and voice over IP programs (such as skype) to communicate with colleagues, collaborators, potential employers and clients worldwide, to graphic or web design programs, blogging tools, and online payment programs to market yourself and sell your products or services.

I worked as Independent Information Profesional and thanks to technology or the IT field it's been more than a blessing. I use Facebook, twitter and LinkedIn, I heavely blog and humbly can say I'm of the few whose clients come through that media (blogging).

LinkedIn using the key words work+from+home can get you started (the plus signs narrow your search and cut out irrelevant postings).

Opportunities are wide-ranging and include IT, graphic design, e-commerce, copywriting, translation and many more. While working from home may not be written into these job descriptions. Employers will make concessions if they're convinced you're right for the job.

Portable businesses produce little profit but as long as you have the Internet, you can have clients anywhere with a portable job or portable career ,my advice? is to use the Internet to earn a living with your skills for instance with languages you can create a language-translation business.

Web Creating and Managing:
Creating and running websites is not for everyone, but getting started as a website publisher is no longer as big a task as it once was thanks largely to blogging specially if you are gifted or have the experience, skills or knowledge in a niche field.

I run a couple of websites. These sites generate income from text ads and affiliate marketing (whereby you promote the goods and services of companies in return for commission).

Photography and Art: The Internet has also opened up opportunities for the visually creative type as well. If you watch 'Charlies Angels", Lisa Lu is an an artist born in New York who painted landscapes and successfully found and sold two markets for her work in Paris. Not only does she sell her pictures online, she also sells them other travelers and locals. She creates and uploads digital pictures of her work to her laptop and then transfers them to an online store.


Writing and Publishing: The Internet has not only enabled a writer to work from anywhere but it has also presented itself as another platform for getting work published.

In order to be a successful writer you need to bring something different to the publishing table. Search out a unique angle and find a niche area. Like any new business, you need to see what gaps exist and attempt to exploit them.

A quick and easy way to get your work out there is by selling on an online auction site such as eBay. With no technical knowledge you can quickly get your work in front of an interested audience.

Travel photography is another field of work that can be made into a business pretty much anywhere. There are many photo stock websites that will display and sell your work.

Finance and Money: I know of one guy who is a day trader. He previously worked for an investment bank as a trader and decided he wanted a change of lifestyle and a move away from the pressure of the trading floor. With a laptop and a good Internet connection he can pretty much trade stocks from anywhere. His choice was Thailand.

Another popular job for portable careers is to play poker online. Gambling carries huge financial risks, but some people out there in some remote corner of the planet play the game and win. I wouldn’t recommend it as a long-term venture unless you really know what you are doing and you can afford to lose what you stake. The same advice goes for trading stocks.

Freelancing: There are many others freelance type jobs that can be conducted remotely via the Internet. Some examples include computer programming, bookkeeping, personal assistant and administration work, copywriting, and designing.

The list is endless. Think of all the work that is being taken offshore now. The Internet has enabled much of this to happen, and there is no reason why you cannot place yourself offshore.
